CHARLTON HOUSE IN TOP 50 - NOV 07

Independent contract catering company, Charlton House, has been ranked in fourth place in a survey of Britain’s top 50 companies within the hospitality sector - one place higher than last year’s.

Eat Out magazine’s Foodservice Top 50 was announced yesterday (13th November) at The Dorchester Hotel in London, and is compiled by canvassing the opinions of 5,000 of the industry's leaders – owners, chief executives, managers and directors of highly successful restaurants, hotels, gastro pubs, contract caterers and suppliers.

They rate their top five operators in the market based on criteria such as profitability, image, staff retention, innovation, sales and corporate social responsibility.

Tim and Robyn Jones established Charlton House at the height of a recession in 1991 and on a weekly government enterprise allowance of just £50. Annual turnover now stands at £67 million and the company employs 1,700 people nationwide.

Two major initiatives from this fast growing independent caterer this year have been the acquisition of City caterer, Chester Boyd, and the launch of a new public catering division, Charlton House Restaurants, to expand into the niche markets of museums, art galleries and other cultural and historic venues.

Commenting on the Top 50 listing, Robyn Jones said: “It is always great to get recognition from one’s own industry, and particularly in such a respected poll. Charlton House is the only contract caterer to have made it into the top 10 so that it quite an achievement in itself.”

Charlton House is one of the UK’s leading independent food service companies, specialising in high quality staff catering services. Clients include the Royal Institute of British Architects, (RIBA), BUPA and Her Majesty’s Treasury.
