CHARLTON HOUSE INTRODUCES RAPESEED OIL - JULY 07

Independent contract caterer, Charlton House, has introduced rapeseed oil into forty of its 135 staff restaurants nationwide in line with the next stage of the company’s highly successful ‘Well Being Being Well’ healthy eating initiative. Following extensive research and secret trials throughout selected staff restaurants nationwide, the independent caterer has made the decision to introduce the oil nationwide over the coming months as a serious alternative to vegetable oil.

Rapeseed oil is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids, in a ratio of 2:1 – second only to flaxseed oil in Omega 3. Due to oleic acid, rapeseed oil has a much higher smoking point of 230◦C, which makes it ideal for roasting and frying and is just as versatile as vegetable or olive oil. It is also rich in antioxidants, (20mg/100g), rich in potassium (800mg/100g), calcium (400mg/100g), phosphorous (800mg/100g) and magnesium (250mg/100g). Cold-pressed rapeseed oil contains virtually no trans fats in its natural state. It has 6% saturated fat content, much lower than most olive oils, which have around 14%, and sunflower oil, which has 10%.

“There are so many reasons why this oil is a far healthier choice than some of the alternatives but we did have some reservations over the taste so we conducted secret trials - without any negative feedback! Clients have given their blessing so we will be rolling it out to all of our staff restaurants throughout the UK over the coming months.” said Caroline Fry, joint managing director of Charlton House.

“Not only does it support our ‘Well Being’ project, but also our corporate environmental initiatives towards a greener planet. Our suppliers, R-Oil, who make and deliver the oil, also collect waste oil from us to turn into bio diesel, which is used to run the machines on the company’s farm in the Cotswold, so it is totally carbon neutral.

“Our goal is to try to bring healthier options into the workplace and we will be implementing many more over the coming months. We have already introduced super foods via our ‘Well Being’ website which has received over 76,000 hits since its launch in February. Healthy eating is a hot topic that’s here to stay and if that means making radical changes to how people eat at work, we are prepared to do that.”
