SUPER FOODS FOR HEALTH AT WORK

Independent staff caterers, Charlton House, have launched a new healthy eating initiative in the workplace to introduce highly nutritional elements into the diet of UK employees during working hours and beyond. Sea vegetables, nuts, grains, pulses and seeds will all appear on Charlton House menus over the coming months.

Under the ‘Well being, being well’ programme, Charlton House will feature a highly nutritional ingredient each week on menus throughout their 135 staff restaurants nationwide. The initiative is supported by a website, www.wellbeingbeingwell.co.uk , which went live on Monday 5th February 2007, and gives full details of the health enhancing properties of the foods featured. In addition, the Michelin-starred chef, David Cavalier, food innovation director of Charlton house, has created a series of recipes incorporating the “ingredient of the week” for Charlton House customers to make at home.

Caroline Fry, joint managing director of Charlton House and the brain behind the new concept, said: “Our goal is to improve health at work and help our customers to make informed choices by giving detailed information on the nutritional and health-enhancing properties of the natural foods featured each week. We are harnessing some of nature’s super foods, such as sea vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains and fruit to make the path to health and well-being as simple as stepping into the staff restaurant."

“There are foods to increase vitality, boost the immune system, reduce cholesterol and detoxify your body. All of the natural foods featured on the ‘Well being, being well’ programme have a range of essential vitamins and minerals to help our customers achieve maximum performance and a sense of well being during working hours.

“We all know that a good the diet is essential to overall good health, but finding the time to research and source some of the more unusual ingredients is often easier said than done, with long working hours, commuting times and family pressures. We are literally handing it to them on a plate – super healthy eating choices as part of their working day.”
The first ingredient to be featured is parsley. More than just a humble garnish, parsley is rich in vitamin B12 and beta carotene and has more vitamin C than most citrus fruit. It aids digestion, purifies the blood and can counteract anaemia.
