TOP CHEFS PLEDGE SUPPORT TO YOUNG CHEF

Marco Pierre White, Tom Aikens and Ashley Palmer-Watts, Heston Blumenthal’s head chef at The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, are to join David Cavalier, food innovation director of Charlton House, in judging the final of Berkshire Young Chef 2007, which takes place at Thames Valley University on Monday 5th March 2007.

This is the first time that such a high profile line-up of Britain’s leading chefs will be involved in the competition, which is organised by Central Berkshire Education Business Partnership (CBEBP) to promote catering among school pupils as a worthwhile career.

The competition is open to pupils in Key Stage 3 (Under 15s) and Key Stage 4/5 (under 18s) in schools across the county. The final represents the culmination of several months' hard work, which saw over 200 students from 15 schools battle through 28 heats to produce 14 pairs of finalists.

The managing director of Central Berkshire Education Business Partnership, Mark Thatcher, said: “The quality of entries to our Young Chef competition shows that there are some talented young people out there. The standard of cuisine bodes well for the future of the catering industry. The competition has been a success story for 10 years and this reflects the growing interest in nutrition. Young Chef thrives thanks to the support we continue to receive from our sponsors, participating schools and other partners”.

David Cavalier said: “ Encouraging chefs of the future has to be of long-term benefit to our industry. I am happy to invest my time and energy to help develop creative and practical food skills, and hopefully, encourage young people to consider a future career in contract catering.”
