SEARCH IS ON TO FIND YOUNG CHEF 2008 - OCT 07

Central Berkshire Educational Business Partnership (CBEBP) is launching its Young Chef competition for the 11th consecutive year. The launch will take place at The White Hart Hotel in Nettlebed, Oxfordshire, on Tuesday 16th October 2007.  David Cavalier of Charlton House, one of the sponsors of the competition, will kick off the launch with a Professional Development Placement (PDP) for Food Technology teachers of students participating in the competition.  Delegates will be given a competition brief, aims and objectives of the competition and a techniques and ingredients demonstration.  Young Chef competition entrants will be asked to have a “local and seasonal” theme to their ingredients list this year.

David Cavalier, food innovation director of Charlton House, said:” A competition such as this not only encourages creativity but also attracts young people to consider catering as an exciting career choice. This year’s focus - on locally produced and seasonal foods - is a subject close to my heart, as I passionately believe that locally sourced, in-season ingredients are not only better for your health but also have less impact on the environment”.

Two hundred secondary school students from across Berkshire are expected to take part in this very popular and prestigious event. Participants are required to create and cook a main course and a dessert with specified ingredients which have a “seasonal and local” theme.   Each participating school will hold its own heat and the winners will compete for the title of Young Chef 2008 on the 3rd March 2008.

Laura Stopforth of CBEBP, project manager of Young Chef 2008 said “The emphasis today is on developing culinary skills in a world of increasing dependence on convenience foods and developing a healthier attitude to the food we eat whilst supporting the national curriculum in financial literacy, ICT and Food Technology.  Because the students work in teams over a period of several months it also develops their team working, leadership and time management skills”

Sponsors of the competition are: Charlton House, 3663, Baxter Storey and Continental Chefs Supplies.
