In the Spotlight: R-Oil

For the sake of our customer’s health and the environment, we have a strict policy to use rapeseed oil wherever possible. In fact, units must seek approval from both an operations manager and the purchasing department if they wish to use anything else.

The majority of our units use our nominated oil supplier, sustainable R-Oil. This home grown company, based in the Cotswolds is owned by Robert and Hamish Campbell, who simply press the rapeseed that they grow on their farm. Every drop of the oil they sell is grown, pressed and bottled on-site.

Robert and Hamish have spent a considerable amount of time researching the processes involved in creating oil of the finest quality. The result is oil that is entirely natural and unadulterated, and lower in saturated fat than sunflower oil and virgin olive oil, yet far more cost effective.

Low saturated fat content is not the only health benefit R-oil offers. The oil is an excellent source of linoleic and linolenic acids, which our bodies can convert to Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, essential for a balanced diet. It also contains no transfats, believed to be particularly negative for our health.

But our absolute favourite thing about R-Oil is the fact that the team will collect used and waste oil from our sites, which they then convert into bio-diesel to run the farm’s vehicles. Meanwhile, oil by-product is used in animal feeds, ensuring that none of the original crop is wasted.

Of course, our chefs and customers are certainly not losing out; R-Oil has a warm amber colour and a lovely light, nutty flavour. When we run tasting sessions within our units, offering customers and clients bread to dip into a range of infused R-Oil dips, the reaction is always really positive. Yum!
